PRINCIPLES OF EFFECTIVE USE OF SCIENTOMETRIC INDICATORS

Abstract

The article discusses the concepts of “predatory journal” and “publish or
perish”, as well as the origin of these terms. It is noted that the impact factor of a
journal and citation indicators depend on many factors that are not always directly
related to the scientific significance of publications. For their correct assessment,
it is necessary to competently use scientometric tools, with special attention to the
quality and effectiveness of scientific research. Examples of violations of scientific
ethics are given, such as artificially inflated scientific productivity, falsification of
results and imitation of scientific activity. Measures taken by international scientific
communities to counteract these negative phenomena are also considered.
